Flash BIOS Upgrades Your manual should state whether the board has a Flash BIOS (most modern ones do), but if you don't have a manual, or just want to make sure, look under the sticker and look for these codes on the chip ( xxx just denotes the capacity): 28Fxxx - 12v 29Cxxx - 5v 29LVxxx - 3v (not often seen) 28Cxxx - EEPROM (like Flash, but needs a special device - Flash works in the motherboard) 27Cxxx - EPROM, so you need UV to erase it and a programmer to rewrite it
Both will be obtainable from the web site or BBS of either your motherboard or BIOS manufacturer (try the former first)
If something goes wrong, Award BIOS chips have a small amount code hardwired into them that will allow at least a boot from a floppy, although you will have to use an ISA video card, as the code only supports that type of bus

In many cases, neither the ROM BIOS nor the software OS of a PC will correctly handle the 1999->2000 transition (a recent system should be OK); but usually all should be well after the year is corrected
However, I have read that PCs with the Award 4.50 BIOS will need the date set EVERY day after 1999-12-31 - 'If your AwardBIOS was released between 26 April 1994 and 31 May 1995, you need to obtain an AwardBIOS update, or reset your system clock every day!'
I've also seen suggestions that the date range given is too narrow - for example: In news:comp.software.year-2000, 1999-05-09, Ron Martell (now <ron @ onlinehelp.bc.ca>) wrote :- 'More correctly Award version 4.5x and then only for BIOS versions produced between certain specific dates
Most of the bad versions date from the last half of 1994 or the first half of 1995 but I have discovered examples with 1996 BIOS dates from one specific motherboard maker.' Both the version number and the release date are critical
In article <385660a7.11236940@news.teo-computer.com> of Tue, 14 Dec 1999 10:47:10 in news:comp.software.year-2000, by Tim Oxler :- 'The Award Software BIOS, which was sold from April 26, 1994 to May 31, 1995 is the only BIOS that is incapable of sustaining a date of 2000/01/01 or greater.' My (UK, 1988) Amstrad PPC640 appears to have a slightly modified ROM BIOS; the RTC only stores YY, and there is no trace of CC anywhere in CMOS
