Climate Prediction Center - Atlantic Hurricane Outlook Update
Current-season forecasts from the US government.
Therefore, 2006 is forecast to be the tenth above-normal season in the last twelve years
The expected activity is lower for three reasons: 1) atmospheric and oceanic conditions are not as conducive as previously forecast, 2) the transition away from La Niña-like rainfall patterns occurred more quickly than expected, and 3) the very persistent upper-level ridge pattern over the eastern U.S
NOAA does not currently make seasonal forecasts for landfalling hurricanes
The May forecast called for 13-16 Tropical Storms, 8-10 Hurricanes, and 4-6 Major Hurricanes

Current forecasts show modest strengthening and a track toward the northwest -- and out to sea -- after passing by the Cape Verdes, but we'll monitor it closely nonetheless
Other models don't depict the disturbance and its environment well from the outset or show a similar evolution to the GFS.Question is, is there any indication of this feature forming? It's tough to give the eyeball method much sway when looking at how upper patterns are evolving because it's tough to break down the winds (current and forecast) without the assistance of a numerical model, but my eyeball method suggests a firm 'maybe.' There is a weak upper low stationary near 22N/42W, but this is a separate feature
